These mini-machines are made in China, and are often described as "kits" because they require some non-trivial cleanup and adjustment before they can be used. Frequently castings are rough, and machined surfaces that should be smooth are not. When my lathe arrived, I completely disassembled it, cleaned off the red Cosmolene, and smoothed out the rough areas. These photos illustrate various stages in this process. I did the same thing to the milling machine, but didn't take any photos.
